Sessions discusses farm bill with growersBrundidge, Alabama (March 27, 2008). – Great concern from area peanut producers was expressed during a recent meeting with U.S. Senator Jeff Sessions (AL) and producers made their views known as to the importance of Congress passing a new farm bill this year. The meeting was held at the Robert E. Barr Nutritional Center in Brundidge, Ala., an appropriate place for such an agriculture meeting considering the area relies greatly on peanut production and agriculture in general for part of their economic base.

House Ag Committee Chair Announces Farm Bill Conferees
WASHINGTON, DC - Agriculture Committee Chairman Collin Peterson announced on Wednesday, April 9, 2008, the list of Representatives appointed by the Speaker of the House of Representatives to participate in the conference committee
that will negotiate the 2008 Farm Bill.
"The Members serving on this conference committee have a challenging job as we work to come to an agreement that will move the Farm Bill forward," Chairman Peterson said. "I'm confident that if everyone comes to the table willing to negotiate and compromise, we can pass a new Farm Bill that will expand important nutrition and conservation programs and provide new resources for fruit and vegetable producers and renewable energy programs while improving the farm
safety net."

U.S. Peanut Acreage Forecast
Peanut producers intend to plant 1.43 million acres of peanuts in 2008, up 16 percent from 2007. A higher price received for the 2007 crop, compared to the previous 5 years, is the main reason for the expected increase in planted acreage. Alabama is estimated to be up 113 percent from 2007 giving the state 180,000 acres to be planted in peanuts in 2008 compared to the 160,000 planted in 2007.

Mark you calendars now! The 10th annual Southern Peanut Growers Conference (SPGC) will be held July 13-15, 2008 at Edgewater Beach Resort in Panama City Beach, Florida. Keep those dates and check back as we draw closer to the date we will bring more information. The conference is sponsored by the Southern Peanut Farmers Federation which is comprised of the Alabama Peanut Producers Association, Florida Peanut Producers Association, Georgia Peanut Commission, and the Mississippi Peanut Growers Association.
