The Southern Peanut Growers (formerly Peanut Advisory Board) is the in-house PR agency for the southeast growers. The one area that Alabama coordinates with the other southeastern states that does not operate under the SPFF is regional and national promotion. The three states created the Southern Peanut Growers (SPG) in 1980 to coordinate national promotional activities. SPG was originally established in conjunction with a national public relations agency in New York City. In 1988, the three states left the New York agency and brought SPG in-house and reestablished it in Atlanta, where it is today. The Mississippi Peanut Growers Association also joined SPG in 2006.
Until the recent establishment of the national grower check-off program, SPG was the major organization with public relation activities that were national in scope. Like the Federation, SPG is owned and funded by the Alabama Peanut Producers Association, the Florida Peanut Producers Association, Georgia Peanut Commission and the Mississippi Peanut Growers Association.
Southern Peanut Growers has established itself as a creditable voice for the industry as well as producers. In addition to its own projects, the PAB has done work for other organizations and companies. Some of these include Menquey’s Peanuts, the American Peanut Council, and the National Peanut Board.
The SPG has a board of 11 grower members consisting of 5 representatives from Georgia, 3 from Alabama, 2 from Florida and 1 from Mississippi. This board approves budget and policy issues. Operations are the responsibility of the Management Board that consists of the SPG executive director and the executive directors of the grower organizations.
