DOT Clarifies Peanut Regulation for Airlines
The Department of Transportation (DOT) has now released clarification to their recently proposed ruling on potentially banning peanuts from airplanes. The DOT clarified that before any ruling could be made the DOT would have to comply with previous legislation requiring a scientific study.
The DOT cannot enact a policy on a peanut free buffer zone or banning peanuts outright, until “90 days after submission to the Congress and the Secretary of a peer-reviewed scientific study that determines that there are severe reactions by passengers to peanuts as a result of contact with very small airborne peanut particles of the kind that passengers might encounter in an aircraft.”
The comment period for the proposed ruling is still open until August 9th.
