  Peanut Research

The APPA board feels that much of the producers' future viability will depend on research. From this viewpoint, the association has funded peanut research at Auburn consistently for over 25 years. The primary areas have been in agronomy, botany, pest management and weed science. Another area has been funding on-farm demonstration plots to test laboratory results in a real world situation.

APPA has recently worked with Auburn in establishing a Peanut Research Advisory Committee to work with researchers on the needs of the industry. The committee is comprised of industry representatives in addition to producers. The intent is two fold. First, the industry can educate researchers on the needs and priorities of the peanut industry, and secondly for the industry can gain a better understanding of the limitations of the research community.

APPA has worked hard with the other members of the SPFF in seeking federal peanut research funding. By involving our own national affairs department along with the lobbying interest of the other states, we have obtained over $8 million for increased peanut related research.

Highlighting these research areas include:

Peanut Allergy Breeding Research$1.5 MillionAl A&M & UGA
Production & Quality Research $5 Million USDA/ARS Lab
Center for Peanut Competitiveness $900 ThousandUGA
TSWV Research
(Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus)
$600 ThousandUGA
Sod Base Rotations Research$1.8 MillionAuburn

The Southeastern Peanut Research Initiative

Under the national check-off program, 20% of the dollars collected must be returned to the regions for production related research. This would represent approximately $1 million annually to the southeast. Rather than each state competing independently for funding from the National Peanut Board, the SPFF proposed to the deans at the University of Florida, University of Georgia and Auburn that the three universities submit through the SPFF one comprehensive proposal representing the entire southeast. A request for proposals for proposals generated over 50-research request.

A committee consisting of the three executive directors and two representatives from each university reviewed and consolidated the requests. A total of 20 new projects representing a two-year program were included in the southeastern proposal to the National Peanut Board. All projects involve cooperative research between the three states. The proposal was approved in its entirety by the NPB. Approximately $500,000 will be allocated to Auburn University.

Southeastern Peanut Research Initiative Components
  • Water Management & Irrigation Efficiency
  • Poultry Litter Use in Peanut Production
  • Peanut Breeding and Variety Development
  • Tillage Systems Comparisons
  • Economic Analysis of SE Production Research
  • Development of an Aflatoxin Risk Index
  • Sustaining Peanut Production in a Long Term Cotton-Peanut Rotation
